Writing is a solo endeavor. The story percolates in your brain. Setting, characters, and plot comes from your brain. The words eventually pour forth through your fingers or voice onto a page. Other people aren’t involved at all.
… are they?
I’ve only been seriously writing with the intent to publish for 1-2 years, but I’ve been astounded by the amount of online writing resources and communities available. Every other day, I get an email about a virtual or in-person writing retreat. There are YouTube channels with writing sprints, writing discord groups, beta reading websites, and twitch streamers running pomodoros – all things geared to help writers hone their craft. These things also create community.
I mention all those things to say that writing absolutely does not need to be done alone. Unless that’s what you want.
Share your experiences in the comment section below. Do you write by yourself or with a group? Which do you prefer? Do you have a favorite writing event or community you’d like to share? I am firmly in the camp of writing with other people, so I’d love to join!
All my best,
RL Platt
