What do you do with all the feedback your beta readers give you?
The process of receiving feedback from beta readers is a crucial stage in the development of any novel. By reviewing their comments and reactions line by line, you can identify recurring themes or trends. If multiple beta readers react similarly to a specific passage, it can serve as a reliable indicator that other readers may share the same sentiments.
Approaching beta reader feedback with an open mind is important, as being defensive can hinder you from being receptive to valuable suggestions. Feedback should not be taken personally. It is not a slight. It is an opportunity to improve your writing craft.
Remember though, that not every suggestion is truth. If something doesn’t resonate with you as the author, discard it and move on. Every reader brings their own bias and preferences to a story and may not jive with your specific vision… and that’s okay.
In closing, editing demands patience. It is rigorous and time-consuming, but to have a polished final product, one ready for publication, it is a requirement.
All my best,
RL Platt
