July 8, 2024: JULY IS WRITING MONTH

Online Writing Events in July

In the HOT, humid weather plaguing Maryland, USA this month, I have been trying to write. Luckily, there are a few online (read: indoor with AC) events for writers this month!

  1. GWIC on discord.
  2. OHHOW on twitch.

If you are looking for motivation to write, nothing helps more than two FULL 24/7 weekends dedicated to writers working and chatting online, just like you!

GLOBAL WRITE IN CRAWL (GWIC) on discord

Discord is a text-based application that can be used to communicate with people from all over the world. In 2020, it was adopted by writers who were participating in Nanowrimo in response to the pandemic. See its Wiki page here. Every April, July, and November since, the GWIC discord server has continued it’s tradition of running 24/7 writing sprints using a “Train Station” theme during the first weekend of the months. I attended the most recent one in July 2024, and let me assure you, it was a BLAST!

ONE HUNDRED HOURS OF WRITING (OHHOW) on twitch

Twitch is an online, video based platform where a host shares audio and visual media so others can view. There is also an option for participants to chat with the host. Popular with gamers, it has been adopted by writers since 2020 as a way to host online sprints and foster community for writers… and thus, OHHOW was born! Similar to GWIC, they host virtual write-ins through the streaming platform during the second weekends of April, July and November. Check out their website here and if you’d like, join in the fun next weekend! I know I will be there!

(And just in case you were wondering, no I’m not sponsored or financially affiliated with either group mentioned above. I just love them and their goals, and wanted to share their freely offered resources with others.)

All my best!
